The ‘Getting Around Taunton’ Comeytrowe Walkers meet every Thursday on Pitts Close at 11am for a 2-3 mile walk followed by a coffee stop.
It’s been a huge success for Sustrans, who launched the initiative, as the walkers are now meeting every week with 8-12 attendants each time.
The group met in May last year (2018) and are now like a big group of friends who enjoy spending time together and many have been feeling fitter for the walking too.
Project officer, Ruby Tobin has told Tone News: “This has been part of our ‘Getting Around Taunton’ project which has been working across the South of Taunton for the last two years encouraging residents, community groups, businesses and schools to choose walking, cycling and other sustainable transport modes for their everyday journeys. The aim of the project was to reduce single occupancy car use by 10% and we’ve reached a whopping 15.2% relative reduction in trips under 5 miles.”
Sustrans are about to launch their ‘Spring Challenge’ to encourage people living or working in the South of Taunton to choose sustainable transport. you can find more details on the Facebook page @SustransTaunton for up to date information and lots of prizes to be won!
