The Queen has announced the death of The Duke of Edinburgh – Prince Philip – calling him ‘her beloved husband’. He was 99 years old and passed away at Windsor Castle this morning (9/4/21).
Among the politicians paying tribute – Boris Johnson praised his ‘steadfast support’ for the Queen”. While Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer says “he dedicated his life to our country”.
Prince Philip was married to the Queen for more than 70 years – carrying out a busy schedule of engagements well into his nineties. He retired from public duties in 2017.
Church bells have been ringing in various parts of the UK.
St Giles’ in central London and Christ Church in Oxford are among the places which have been marking the death of Prince Philip.
Crowds have already begun gathering at Windsor Castle to mourn the loss of the Duke.
Bouquets of flowers have been laid at the gates there.
