By Sue Medcalf
One grey November morning 5 years ago, my sister rang me:
“Sue . . . I have badgers digging up my back garden, do you have any ideas on how I can discourage them because I don’t want to scare them?”
Listen to our EXCLUSIVE interview at the bottom of this page.
So, I did some research on badgers and how they live their lives and by doing so, it changed my life!
Over the coming months, I became fascinated with the creatures and ended up speaking to to my sister every day after making up a story to cheer her up.
I created the character Itchybald Scratchet (Itchy to his friends) and the stories began about his adventures trying to stop Upples (People) building on his woodland home.
There are now six books in the series and Itchy meets lots of new friends, such as Enormouse (Norm), Neighomi (A shire horse) and many more.
Itchybald Scratchet also travels (as badgers do!) and finds himself wandering around in Australia! How and why, you can find the answer to those questions by reading the books.
I hope the books will inspire and encourage children of all ages and nationalities, people with learning difficulties or disabilities to enjoy and learn from reading.
Our most recent book review was from London Publisher’s ‘Marketing Executive’ who said:
“A wonderful, enchanting series of books about a brave badger and his fantastic furry friends. Funny, charming and educational, these books are perfect for kids aged 5-8. If you’re looking for a quirky, fun adventure series, you can’t go past Itchybald Scratchet. I can’t wait for the next book!”
Hopefully by now you have read enough to want to go and have a look at our website and perhaps buy the books, they will make a wonderful gift!
