Even though the number of people smoking across the Taunton Deane area is lower than ever before, there are many who still enjoy their cigarettes. Public Health England show that 13.9% of people in the South West smoke against a national figure of 14.4%. In Somerset the figure is higher still at 15.9%.
If you’re thinking about making the switch to a non-smoker, like any addiction, it requires more than just willpower to quit. Stoptober 2019 will provide you with all of the support and information you need.
The NHS website is an effective resource to support your attempt at quitting. It’s full of helpful information on the services that the NHS do (and don’t) offer. There is also a smoke free app which people can download for free and the option to create a free personal quit plan.
Dedicated support is available through Smokefreelife Somerset Quit Clubs as well as a range of aids to stop smoking which are available from local pharmacies.
Rachel Rowe, Associate Director of Long Term Conditions, Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group has told Tone News: “We all know smoking is bad for us. It increases our risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and a whole host of other health problems.
“We know research shows that many smokers want to quit but face a range of barriers, including fear of failure. For some people, it takes more than one attempt to quit. Stoptober 2019 offers a great opportunity to make a quit attempt as if a smoker makes it to 28 days smokefree they are five times more likely to quit for good.”
